AND WILCO ON “DARK STAR” > “CALIFORNIA STARS” > “DARK STAR” IN ATLANTA

We hate to sound like a broken record, but as the AmericanaramA tour rolled on to Atlanta tonight for performances by Grateful Dead / Furthur guitarist Bob Weir, and tour headliners My Morning Jacket, Wilco and Bob Dylan the big story was Weir’s sit ins with Wilco and MMJ. This comes after the AmericanaramA tour opener in West Palm Beach, which was highlighted by a Weir sit-in with Wilco, and Thursday night’s visit to Tampa where Bobby sat in with both MMJ and Wilco.
Weir kicked off tonight’s show at Aaron’s Amphitheatre at Lakewood in Atlanta and treated fans to solo acoustic versions of songs from the Grateful Dead repertoire such as “The Other One,” “Playing In The Band” and “Hell In A Bucket” along with covers of Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece,” The Platters’ “Twilight Time” and Delbert McClinton’s “Standing on Shaky Ground.”
My Morning Jacket was up next and mixed classics like “One Big Holiday,” “Wordless Chorus” and “It Beats 4 U” with material from 2011’s Circuital including the title track and “Victory Dance.” Bobby emerged towards the end of MMJ’s set for “I Know You Rider.” The Louisville-based band had never played “Rider,” which was a staple at Grateful Dead shows.
Wilco once again opened with a pair of Mermaid Avenue songs with lyrics penned by Woody Guthrie in “Airline To Heaven” and “When The Roses Bloom Again” before dipping back to their debut album for “Shouldn’t Be Ashamed.” Seven songs into Wilco’s set, Weir came back out for the dream segment of “Dark Star” > “California Stars” > “Dark Star.” That marks three shows in a row where Weir has sat in with Wilco and three nights where they teamed for at least one Grateful Dead tune. Tonight’s version of “Dark Star” was a debut for Wilco. Guitarist Nels Cline was sporting Duane Allman’s famed 1957 Les Paul guitar, on loan from the Big House Museum. The Chicago-based band closed with a pair of classics in “Monday” and “Outta Site (Outta Mind).”
Bob Dylan continues to shy away from any collaborations as he stuck to a very similar set as the ones he played at the first two AmericanaramA tour stops.
